At the 1990 FIFA World Cup, Illgner, by now national side first-choice, was in exceptional form, and superbly commanded the backline, which then consisted of the experienced Klaus Augenthaler, Andreas Brehme, Thomas Berthold, Guido Buchwald and Jürgen Kohler (with Matthias Sammer taking Augenthaler's place at Euro 1992).

After his spell in Stuttgart, where Buhtz had worked with future stars such as Jürgen Klinsmann or Guido Buchwald, he all but retired, only taking over at 2nd Bundesliga side Fortuna Köln for a few months in the 1986–87 season.
In 1989 the powerful free-kick specialist was part of the Stuttgart XI with Guido Buchwald and Jürgen Klinsmann that got defeated by Diego Maradona's SSC Napoli in the UEFA Cup final.
