The original MIRS System was renamed IDEN in 1994 by Roger Cameron Wood, a young engineering program manager leading the product development effort who also gave the handsets their distinctive industrial design, group software features, and "chirp" audio cue.

The SMR 800 MHz band was used exclusively for iDEN technology, however, Sprint Corporation is deploying CDMA and LTE technology on this band.
It provides nationwide wireless service using UMTS, with supplemented coverage through a domestic roaming agreement with Pelephone (until they reach full coverage) and Integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN) technology (in the 800Mhz SMR band) with PTT service that appeals mainly to businesses and large organizations.
The multitude of incompatible mobile phone systems in the United States and some other countries makes the situation more difficult — it is not clear if the onboard repeaters will be compatible with all of the different cell-phone protocols (TDMA, GSM, CDMA, iDen) and their respective providers.
There are currently five companies in Israel which offer cellular communication service (with network technology used listed in brackets): Pelephone CDMA and UMTS , Cellcom GSM and UMTS , Partner Communications (Orange) GSM and UMTS , HOT Mobile (Mirs) UMTS and iDEN , and Golan Telecom UMTS .
