Illinois Route 394 is a four-lane state freeway that travels south from Thornton at the Interstate 294/Interstate 94/Interstate 80 (Tri-State Tollway/Bishop Ford Freeway; this route is an extension of the latter freeway) interchange to Illinois Route 1 south of Steger and Crete.
Traveling eastbound from O'Hare, the Kennedy interchanges with the eastern terminus of the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (Interstate 90) and with the Tri-State Tollway (Interstate 294) at a complex junction just west of Illinois Route 171 (Cumberland Avenue).
The original designations for the expressway were Interstate 80, 90, and 294, as well as a portion of U.S. Route 6.
