7 unusual facts about Interstate 87

Interstate 87

It immediately traverses the Albany Pine Bush Preserve and passes west of Rensselaer Lake before crossing CSX Transportation's Hudson Subdivision and running parallel to Wolf Road, a business thoroughfare through the town of Colonie.

The section of I-87 between exits 38 and 39 crosses a marshy area surrounding Dead Creek, a stream feeding into nearby Cumberland Bay.

The Northway and I-87 end shortly thereafter at the Canadian border, where the highway continues past the Champlain-St. Bernard de Lacolle Border Crossing into Quebec as A-15.

Marist Red Foxes

Many fans and sportswriters refer to this match-up as "The Battle of I-87" because of the two-hour proximity of each school on Interstate 87 (Coincidentally, the approximate distance between the two is 87.4 miles).

New York State Route 146

Soon after the NY 146A intersection, the route encounters I-87 (the Adirondack Northway) at exit 9 and intersects US 9.

Examples of dumbbell interchanges in the United States are located on Interstate 35 in Medford, Minnesota, on Interstate 87 in Malta, New York, on Interstate 17 at Happy Valley Road north of Phoenix, Arizona, and on Interstate 80 at California State Route 89 (exit 185) in Truckee, California.

Nanuet, New York

The opening of the New York State Thruway (Interstate 87/287), the Tappan Zee Bridge, and the Palisades Interstate Parkway in the 1950s helped usher in decades of population growth and real estate development, including the construction of the Nanuet Mall and local shopping centers.

New Jersey Route 17

Route 17 interchanges with Stag Hill Road just before merging with six-lane Interstate 287, which it follows to the New York border, where the road continues into Hillburn, Rockland County as Interstate 287 and New York State Route 17, intersecting Interstate 87 (the New York State Thruway) shortly after the state line.
