The first train service in southern India and the third in India was operated by Madras Railway from Royapuram / Veyasarapady to Wallajah Road (Arcot) in 1856.

Jolarpettai Junction is one of the Class A junctions in the Southern Railways which is the 'Border' station of Chennai Division.Earlier most trains used to change crew at this station which is not the case now.
