Carlson's election followed a scandal arising after the initial Republican nominee, businessman Jon Grunseth, was accused of sexual improprieties that allegedly occurred several years earlier with two then-underage girls.
Grunseth now lives in Barnes Bay, Bruny Island, Tasmania, Australia, where he purchased property in 1997 and founded Lennonville Orchards, a large cherry-growing operation.
