The project is a five story outdoor retail complex, with the main passage being diagonally oriented to the street grid and at the time anchored by Nordstrom, Macy's, and a Sam Goody music store; and connected to a Westin Hotel and the Balboa Theatre, resulting in an urban mixed-use center.

Mod7

In 2004, mod was asked to work with the firm of American architect Jon Jerde (The Jerde Partnership), and to develop a website that catalogued Jerde’s influential work, which includes Horton Plaza, the Mall of America, the Bellagio (hotel and casino), and the Los Angeles 1984 Summer Olympics.

Westside Pavilion

That plan eventually evolved into an expansion of the mall, designed by the mall's original architect, Jon Jerde, which included new shops and al fresco restaurants all connected to the rest of the mall by a bridge over Westwood.

Westside Shopping and Leisure Centre

Critics, such as David Rogers of the Los Angeles-based Jerde Partnership, have faulted Bern for neglecting to integrate such a shopping centre into the city’s urban fabric.
