She began publishing fiction in the early 1990s, winning the Journey Prize in 1993 for her short story "Sister Doyle's Men".
The award was endowed by James A. Michener, who donated the Canadian royalty earnings from his 1988 novel Journey.
This was Lee Henderson's first book, and contained some previously published short stories, one of which, "Sheep Dub" was part of the 2000 Journey Prize Anthology.
