Coincidentally, the type of aircraft that was used to complete the mapping program was the Avro Lancaster, a World War II heavy bomber which had been converted for mapping.

On 14 July 1986, he departed from Newcastle to make his way across the North Atlantic up the west coast of Greenland to enter Lancaster Sound, eventually reaching Fort Ross at the east end of Bellot Strait.
Lady Franklin Bay is named for a Victorian woman Lady Jane Griffen Franklin, wife of famous British explorer Sir John Franklin who vanished from Baffin Bay beyond Lancaster Sound on the HMS Erebus in 1845 while attempting to trace the Northwest Passage.
