Huang-Lao

Chao Cuo (d. 154 BCE), Chancellor to Emperor Jing, was another Huang-Lao official.

Excepting the Huangdi Neijing, most Huang-Lao texts have vanished, and traditional scholarship associates this philosophical school with Chinese classics such as Xunzi, Hanfeizi, and Huainanzi.

However, with the exception of the medical Huangdi Neijing ("Yellow Emperor's Internal Classic"), all were believed destroyed or lost – until the recent Mawangdui discoveries.

Thai people

These groups include Central Thai (also the standard variety of the language), the Isan (more closely related to the Standard Lao of Laos than to Standard Thai), Lanna Thai and Southern Thai.


An Lão

An Lão can refer to several districts of South Vietnam.

Anouvong

In 2010, to coincide with the 450th Anniversary celebrations of Vientiane, the Lao government created the Chao Anouvong Park, complete with a large bronze statue of the locally revered King.

John Everingham

During the Vietnam War he received acclaim from the mainstream media, and disdain from the American military, for his reporting on the effects of B-52 dumping runs on their way back to bases in Udon Thani, Thailand — when bombers didn't drop all their payload over Hanoi, they dumped their bombs in Laos to cut the risk of accidents on landing, which led to innocent rural Lao and Hmong being killed.

Khampheng Sayavutthi

Khampheng Sayavutthi born 19 July 1986 in Vientiane, is a Laotian football player, who has played for YOTHA FC (MCTPC FC) in the Lao League, the top division of the Lao football League, and the Laos national team.

Khao soi

Lao khao soi is still made with the traditional noodles and in some markets in Luang Namtha and Muang Sing you can still see the vendors cutting the noodles.

Lao ceramics

Lao ceramics were first uncovered in 1970 at a construction site at kilometer 3, Thadeua Road in the Vientiane area, Mekong Valley, Laos.

According to Honda and Shimozu (The Beauty of Fired Clay: Ceramics from Burma, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand, 1997), the Lao kilns are similar to the Siamese types found at Suphanburi and Si Satchanalai.

Lao kip

On November 15, 2010 a 100,000 kip banknote was issued to commemorate the 450th anniversary of the founding of the capital, Vientiane and the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

The Pathet Lao kip was introduced some time before 1976 in the areas which were under the control of the Pathet Lao.

In 1945-1946, the Free Lao government in Vientiane issued a series of paper money in denominations of 10, 20 and 50 att and 10 kip before the French authorities took control of the region.

Lao language

According to some, most dialects of Lao and Isan have six tones, those of Luang Prabang have five.

The Lao language is descended from Tai languages spoken in what is now southern China and northern Vietnam (probably by some of the various peoples referred to as the Baiyue) in areas believed to be the homeland of the language family and where several related languages are still spoken by scattered minority groups.

Muang Phuan

The Tai Phuan or Phuan people are a Buddhist Tai-Lao ethnic group that migrated to Laos from southern China, and had by the 13th century formed the independent principality of Muang Phuan at the Plain of Jars, with Xieng Khouang (contemporary Muang Khoun) as the capital.

Nan, Thailand

By the end of the -14th century Nan was one of the nine northern Thai-Lao principalities that comprised Lan Na Thai (now Lanna) and the city state flourished throughout the 15th century under the name Chiang Klang (Middle City), a reference to its position roughly midway between Chiang Mai (New City) and Chiang Thong (Golden City, which is today's Luang Prabang).

National Library of Laos

Starting in October 2007, the Library has been collaborating with the University of Passau and the Berlin State Library (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin Preußischer Kulturbesitz) to create the Digital Library of Lao Manuscripts (ໂຄງການຫໍສະໝຸດດິຈິຕອລໜັງສືໃບລານລາວ).

Nicotiana rustica

Nicotiana rustica, known in South America as mapacho and in Vietnam as thuoc lao (thuốc lào), is a plant in the Solanaceae family.

Nokasad

In 1778 Chakri led a Siamese army which captured Vientiane, also Luang Phrabang, a northern Lao kingdom submitted, and eventually established Siamese domination over Laotian kingdoms.
