Immediately, Scheffczyk took to theological work and within a year of his ordination he was already a theology professor at the seminary in Königstein im Taunus.

In the 1970s and early 1980s, he cooperated with Leo Scheffczyk (the later Cardinal) at the theological-philosophical faculty of the University of Munich.
Although he was not a voting cardinal he was created a cardinal to reward him for his theological writings in much the same way as Avery Dulles and Leo Scheffczyk were.
