He was elected bishop of Viterbo e Tuscania in 1826 and was consecrated that same year by Pope Leo XII.
He received gold medals from Pope Leo XII, the University of Pennsylvania, the Royal Geographical Society, and the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, and was knighted in 1906.

The lower part of the façade was refinished in plaster in the 18th century, and the whole church was then restored about a century later by Pope Leo XII.
