The Liverpool Plains is generally regarded as the richest agricultural region in Australia owing to its rich black soils, which originally supported a mixed grassland vegetation containing both annual and perennial grasses, which early in the region's history were used to feed cattle and sheep.
It was abolished by amalgamation in 2004, with the parts of the shire north of the Liverpool Range being incorporated into the new Liverpool Plains Shire, and the part of the shire south of the Liverpool Range, including the town of Murrurundi, merged into the new Upper Hunter Shire.
It was merged with Quirindi Municipality in 1981 to form Quirindi Shire, which was subsequently merged with parts of several other shires to form Liverpool Plains Shire, in 2004.
