unusual facts about Magnesium

Marek Gazdzicki

Starting in 1980, Gazdzicki participated in the SKM200 experiment at the Dubna Synchrophasotron, focusing on the investigation of hadron production in (He-Mg)+(Li-Pb) collisions at 4.5A GeV using a streamer chamber.

Archibald Geikie

Dorsa Geikie, a wrinkle ridge system on the Moon, and the mineral geikielite, a magnesium-titanium oxide, are both named after him, as is Geikie Gorge in the Napier Range in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia.

Buell Motorcycle Company

The XBRR frame was a XB1/XB2 hybrid, the suspension came from Swedish manufacturer Öhlins, and the wheels were made of magnesium.

Dunlop cheese

Salt from the saltpans at Saltcoats was often used in the manufacture of Dunlop cheese and it contained magnesia and Epsom Salts (magnesium sulphate) which gave the cheese a pleasant and distinctive taste; indeed it was debated whether cheese made using cheaper imported mined salt could be called 'Dunlop' cheese.

Flame fougasse

This assembly was placed in a rubber sponge bag that was, in turn, inside a used cocoa tin; four ounces (100 g) of magnesium alloy turnings were added, the electrical wires were passed through a small hole in the lid of the tin which was then tightly fitted.

Head Standard

A number of metal skis were introduced over the years, among them the 1942 All Magnesium, a post-war run of 1,000 Metalite aluminum skis from Chance Vought, the stainless steel Chris Ski, the aluminum Alu-60 (later known as the TEY True-Flex), the Dow Metal Air Ski, and the Gomme from the UK.

Herbert Henry Dow

Dow Chemical quickly moved to fill the gap, producing magnesium for incendiary flares, monochlorobenzene and phenol for explosives, and bromine for medicines and tear gas.

Koenigsegg CC8S

The CC8S uses magnesium alloy wheels with center-locking hubs, which 225/40ZR 18" front and 335/40ZR 20" rear Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires are mounted.

Lotus 18

Further contributing to the weight advantage was the adoption of lightweight sequential manual transmission originally developed for Lotus 12 by Richard Ansdale and Harry Mundy incorporating the unique sequential-shifting gearbox and a ZF limited slip differential in a common Magnesium alloy housing to form a transaxle, which also provided the mounting points for inboard rear brakes.

Magnesium chloride

It has been found that higher concentrations of magnesium in tomato and some pepper plants can make them more susceptible to disease caused by infection of the bacteria Xanthomonas campestris, since Mg is essential for bacterial growth.

Magnesium diboride

Hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition (HPCVD) has been the most effective technique for depositing magnesium diboride (MgB2) thin films.

Magnesium hydroxide

The term milk of magnesia was first used for a white-colored, aqueous, mildly alkaline suspension of magnesium hydroxide formulated at about 8%w/v by Charles Henry Phillips in 1880 and sold under the brand name Phillips' Milk of Magnesia for medicinal usage.

Magnesium sulfate

Magnesium sulfate has been used as an experimental treatment of Irukandji syndrome caused by envenomation by certain species of Irukandji jellyfish, however the efficacy of this treatment remains unproven.

Magnesium trisilicate

On March 12, 2007, Chinese health authorities seized and halted the use of magnesium trisilicate at Shaanxi Province KFC franchises, suspecting it to be a possible carcinogen.

Matchless G50

Former Isle of Man TT winner George Beale set up George Beale Motorcycles in Coleorton, Leicestershire to make a range of replica motorcycles, including Matchless G50 racing motorcycles to a high specification which includes a special lightweight frame and swing arm, Ceriani forks and a magnesium six speed gear box with lightweight clutch.

Metalloanthocyanin

Commelinin, a blue pigment from the flowers of Commelina communis, is a complex of 4 Mg2+ ions chelating six anthocyanin molecules.

Mosler Automotive

A Photon variant is available which adds a Hewland transmission, thinwall subframes, BBS magnesium wheels, titanium springs, and carbon fiber seats and bodywork, reducing the car's mass to 1,980 lb (900 kg).

Nikon FM10

This chassis is also used, in heavily reworked form, as the basis for the recent Rollei 35RF, Zeiss Ikon and Cosina's own Voigtländer branded Bessa R series of 35 mm film rangefinder (RF) cameras as well as the unique Epson R-D1 digital rangefinder camera in magnesium alloy.

RAF Podington

Missions were flown to Wilhelmshaven, a tire plant at Hanover, airfields near Paris, an aircraft factory at Nantes, and a magnesium mine and reducing plant in Norway.

Sulfite process

It used magnesium as the counter ion and was based on work by Carl Daniel Ekman.

Tourmaline

The name dravite was used for the first time by Gustav Tschermak (1836–1927), Professor of Mineralogy and Petrography at the University of Vienna, in his book Lehrbuch der Mineralogie (published in 1884) for magnesium-rich (and sodium-rich) tourmaline from the village Unterdrauburg, Drava river area, Carinthia, Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Ultramafic rock

Serpentine soil is a magnesium rich, calcium, potassium and phosphorus poor soil that develops on the regolith derived from ultramafic rocks.
