At the age of 19, Russo found himself touring alongside his brother Justin as bassist for critically acclaimed Mercury Rev during the band's peak, before moving on to focus entirely on his own eclectic psychedelic rock band Hopewell.
After releasing their first record Contact on Burnt Hair Records, both brothers took a break from their own project and joined indie/experimental band Mercury Rev.

Although he may be best known for founding the seminal ambient classical projects Stars of the Lid, The Dead Texan, Aix Em Klemm, & A Winged Victory for the Sullen, he also has recorded, played, and worked as a live sound engineer for famed artists such as The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Labradford, Bedhead, The Bad Livers, Windsor for the Derby, Iron & Wine, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Hauschka, and Sparklehorse.
