For seven years he was the art director for the literary Simon and Schuster imprint, Scribner, where he designed bestselling book jackets for authors such as Stephen King, Steve Martin, Annie Proulx, Don DeLillo, Miranda July, Kathy Reichs, Bobby Flay and many more.
The project was created in 2002 by Miranda July and Harrell Fletcher, with a website created by Yuri Ono as an artistic piece, and closed in 2009.
He has also directed music videos for The Shins, Broken Bells, Sleater- Kinney, and YACHT, while also collaborating on projects with artists such as Miranda July, James Mercer, Patton Oswalt, and Calvin Johnson.
And while the show features regular guest interviews with authors such as Joyce Carol Oates, Jonathan Lethem, and Miranda July, and musicians as diverse as Laura Veirs, Don Byron, and k.d. lang, it also has several recurring segments.
The Subconscious Art of Graffiti Removal (USA, 2001, 16 min) is an experimental documentary directed by filmmaker Matt McCormick and narrated by Miranda July that makes the tongue-in-cheek argument that municipal efforts by Portland, Oregon to mask and erase graffiti is an important new movement in modern art stemming from the repressed artistic desires of city workers.
While in New York, the magazine's focus shifted from Japanese-influenced content to street culture aesthetics and then to a more global arts magazine featuring interviews with recognized artists such as Lou Reed, Richard Prince, James Brown, Francesco Clemente, Roger Corman, Ed Ruscha and Jeff Koons, while continuing to cover up-and-coming artists such as Harmony Korine, Miranda July, Cory Arcangel and Simone Shubuck.
