This included studies performed at the Jüdischen Krankenhaus (Jewish Hospital) in Berlin, and at Capanna Regina Margherita, a research station at the top of Monte Rosa, Italy.
Kiel's hobby was mountaineering and at age 60, he climbed Europe's second highest peak, the Monte Rosa, on the Swiss-Italian border.
He was a member of the party which made the first ascent of Monte Rosa in 1855 and, in 1857, a founder member of the Alpine Club, having been a friend of its first president, John Ball, at Cambridge.
Many of his field studies were conducted at Capanna Regina Margherita, a research station at the apex of Monte Rosa, Italy.

It lies just north of Monte Rosa, at a height of 3,970 metres above sea level, and overlooks the village of Macugnaga on its east side (in the Italian region of Piedmont), 2,600 metres below.
Monte Rosa itself lies near the intersection of a great north and south ridge, extending from the Balfrin through the Mischabelhörner, and the highest peaks of the mountain itself, to the Vincent Pyramide, and thence through the range that bounds the Val de Lys, nearly to Ivrea, with the transverse range lying between the Dent d'Herens and the Pizzo Bianco near Macugnaga.
Rifugio Guglielmina was an historic alpine hut on the South side of the Monte Rosa range at 2880 m above sea level, situated in the commune of Alagna Valsesia, Piedmont, Italy.
On clear days, the range may be observed from the forts of Genoa to the Maritime Alps and from Monte Rosa to the Adamello, and it may be seen as far as Corsica.
Gressoney, Champoluc, Alagna Valsesia and Macugnaga (under the impressive east face, intensely glaciated and some 2,500 metres high) are the main mountain and ski resorts that surround Monte Rosa along its southern side.
