Annabella, Utah

The first two families to settle Anabella in 1871 were those of Harry Dalton, a member of the Mormon Battalion, and Joseph Powell.

Mixed-blood

One such example is Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, who guided the Mormon Battalion from New Mexico to the city of San Diego in California in 1846, and then accepted an appointment there as alcalde of Mission San Luis Rey.

Mormon Trail

While at Fort Laramie, the vanguard company was joined by members of the Mormon Battalion, who had been excused due to illness and sent to winter in Pueblo, Colorado, and a group of Church members from Mississippi.

At this open area, where the Iowa School for the Deaf is now located, the LDS emigrant companies paused and camped, forming what was called the Grand Encampment. From this site on July 20, the Mormon Battalion departed for the Mexican-American War.

Running Springs, California

Running Springs was originally known as Hunsacker Flats, named for Abraham Hunsacker, an early member of a Mormon Battalion.
