The race, held at the former United States Navy air base in still remote Western Australia, had just ten starters, seven of which had made the long trek across the Nullarbor Plain from the eastern states, joined by just three local entries.
Finger or tool marks made in the dried mud on the cave wall are thought to be of prehistoric Aboriginal origin and are similar to those of Koonalda Cave on the Nullarbor Plain.

In 2002, eight remarkably complete skeletons of T. carnifex were discovered in a limestone cave under Nullarbor Plain, where the animals fell through a narrow opening in the plain above.

Mamungari Conservation Park (formerly known as Unnamed Conservation Park) is a wilderness reserve in South Australia (Australia) in the southern Great Victoria Desert and northern Nullarbor Plain, around 200 km west of Maralinga and 450 km northwest of Ceduna.
He made several private ornithological collecting expeditions across remote areas of Australia, to Alice Springs (1913), Musgrave and Everard Ranges (1914), Cooper Creek (1916), Nullarbor Plain (1917-1918), Finke River (1921), and Adelaide to Darwin and return (1922), on behalf of Gregory Mathews.
