2 unusual facts about Swan Coastal Plain

Swan Coastal Plain

Kwongan vegetation contains a large number of endemic plant species especially shrubs and wildflowers including yellow flame and toothbrush grevilleas, fan-flowers, and cockies tongues.

The Swan coastal plain is a particularly important centre for certain types of plant including banksia but also Caladenia orchids and Leucopogon shrubs, indeed some genera, such as the Dryandra series of banksia and the Synaphea flowers are found nowhere else in the world.

Helena Valley, Western Australia

The river valley is the centre of the catchment of the Helena River and extends from the edge of the Darling Scarp where Boya, Gooseberry Hill and Helena Valley define the 'mouth' of the valley that opens to the Swan Coastal Plain, east and south east past Mundaring Weir and Lake C.Y. O'Connor to its origins in the region of Mount Dale.

Western swamp turtle

The western swamp turtle has been recorded only in scattered areas on the Swan Coastal Plain in Western Australia, from Perth Airport to near Pearce Royal Australian Air Force Base in the Bullsbrook locality.

Xanthorrhoea preissii

Its occurrence is a characteristic of two other Marri (Corymbia calophylla) communities, but the Marri/Xanthorrhoea community is distinguished by the drier soils of the communities range along the eastern edge of the Swan Coastal Plain.
