Their youngest son, Roy de Maistre (1894–1968), born after de Mestre had retired from training, was a successful artist who lived the later part of his life in London where he formed a friendship with novelist Patrick White.

The building was purchased by a syndicate of people and there are currently 600 owners including noted actors, writers and performers: Robyn Archer, Gillian Armstrong, Peter Carey, Ruth Cracknell, Judy Davis, Mel Gibson, Max Gillies, Dorothy Hewett, Nicole Kidman, Sam Neill, Dame Joan Sutherland, Patrick White, David Williamson, Neil Armfield, Mike Willesee, Colin Friels, and Gwen Plumb.
Not quite a critical response, but in his autobiography Flaws in the Glass, Australian Nobel Laureate Patrick White, writing of his experience of the Second World War says "Otherwise I had dried up. There were stirrings of what I had it in me to write if there were ever a peace, but that didn't seem likely. So I read. I read The Bible, literally from cover to cover. I read The peapickers and was filled with a longing for Australia, a country I saw through a childhood glow".
Her translations of individual stories by Edith Pargeter, Henry Lawson, Alan Marshall, Vance Palmer, Doris Lessing, Wyatt Rainey Blassingame, Hal Porter, and the story titled Dead Roses from the book The Burnt Ones by Patrick White have been published in Czech literary magazine Světová literatura World Literature.
