Aguirre Passage

Named by the Chilean Antarctic Expedition, 1950–51, after Don Pedro Aguirre Cerda, President of Chile, 1938–41.

Pedro Aguirre Cerda

He was born in Pocuro, a small village near the city of Los Andes, in Chile.

He also promoted and campaigned for a Nobel prize for Gabriela Mistral, which only came to fruition under his successor, Juan Antonio Ríos.

The Chilean President Pedro Aguirre Cerda had named the poet Pablo Neruda Special Consul in Paris for Immigration, and he was charged with what he called "the noblest mission I have ever undertaken": shipping the Spanish refugees, who had been housed by the French in internment camps, to Chile.
