He received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University (where he was initiated into Phi Kappa Tau fraternity) and a master of science degree in aerospace engineering through the Air Force Institute of Technology program at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in 1967.
Kopf received his B.A. from Kearney State College (now the University of Nebraska at Kearney) in 1969 where he was a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity.

He was the author of The Golden Jubilee History of Phi Kappa Tau in 1957, A Diamond Jubilee History of the National Interfraternity Conference: 75 Glorious Years in 1984 and at the time of his death he was serving as editor of the current edition of Baird's Manual of American College Fraternities.
The Painted Turtle was founded in 1999 by Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity Alumnus Paul Newman and Page and Lou Adler.
