In 1927 and 1928, Bluefield State was voted the Black college football national champion by the Pittsburgh Courier.
Ormes started in journalism as a proofreader for the Pittsburgh Courier, a weekly African American newspaper that came out every Saturday.
Most significantly, the paper extensively covered the injustices on African-Americans perpetrated by the Pullman Company and supported the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters.

Hunter was born Kristin Eggleston in Philadelphia, attended the University of Pennsylvania, where she received her bachelor's degree in Education (1951), and wrote for the Pittsburgh Courier, a black newspaper, until 1952.
In a poll taken in 1952 by the African-American weekly Pittsburgh Courier poll named Hill the fourth-best outfielder in Negro League history, behind Oscar Charleston, Monte Irvin and Cristóbal Torriente.
Zora Neale Hurston covered the trial for the Pittsburgh Courier from the fall of 1952 through Ruby McCollum's conviction just before Christmas.
During this entire period Adams served as a reporter, working as a stringer for the Associated Press as well as the Associated Negro Press and contributing regular articles to George Schuyler’s Pittsburgh Courier and a host of other publications.
