The Matilda Wattenbach made it to Auckland first on September 8, 1862 and the new settlers made their own way to the settlement of Albertland (now known as Port Albert).
The old lantern was dismantled in 1992 and removed to Port Albert, where it was restored for display at the Port Albert Maritime Museum in 2004.
Cliffy Island is located about 32 kilometres directly south of Port Albert, and roughly 38 kilometres to the northeast of Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse in Victoria, Australia.
Initially the area was known as Seabank or Old Port, but was changed to New Leith when the town started developing, and later changed to Alberton and Port Albert in honour of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the husband of Queen Victoria.
