The municipality is located in the Lugano district along the road from punta di Poiana(in Riva San Vitale) along Lake Lugano to the Italian border at Porto Ceresio.
Buses of the Autolinea Mendrisiense and AutoPostale serve stops outside the station, providing links to Arogno, Brusino, Melano, Mendrisio, Porto Ceresio, Riva San Vitale and Rovio.

Since December 2004 the section from Gallarate to Varese is used by the trains of the line S5 of Milan suburban railway service.
As from 2013, Varese railway station will become international, upon the opening of the new Varese–Arcisate (I)–Stabio (CH)–Mendrisio railway, which will branch off at Arcisate from the Varese-Porto Ceresio line, and then enter Switzerland at Stabio.
