In 1474 the monastery church Saints Cosmas and Damian became the parish church of the village of Gutenzell which had developed around the abbey.

It was a gift from Otto III, Holy Roman Emperor to the convent in Essen in 993 AD and symbolises the martyrdom of Saints Cosmas and Damian, the patron saints of that city.
He spent the next 37 years in the Monastery of Saints Cosmas and Damian in the Kosmidion suburb of Constantinople (modern Eyüp).
