One of his songs, Ihr Christen allgleiche, was written on the occasion of the Siege of Vienna in 1529 by the Ottoman Turks.

In 1314 Gœrlingen was listed among the assets of the Abbey of Lixheim, but by 1542, when fears of a further Turkish attack on Vienna prompted a general census of assets in the empire, Gœrlingen had disappeared from the Lixheim records.
Finally, on 18 February 1529, Charles V, deeply alarmed by the Ottoman progression towards Vienna, again sent a letter from Toledo to Shah Ismail, who had died in 1524 and had been replaced by Shah Tahmasp, pleading for a military diversion.
During the siege of Vienna by the Turks in 1683 he commanded the company formed of students as chief sergeant-major.
The book's thesis is that throughout recent history, specifically beginning with the failure of the second Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683, the Islamic world has failed to modernize or to keep pace with the Western world in a variety of respects, and that this failure has been seen by many within the Islamic world as having allowed Western powers to acquire a disastrous position of dominance over those regions.

The prior church had an iconic painting of the Madonna del Buon Aiuto (Our Lady of Good Help), originally attributed to Lucas Cranach, donated by Countess Teresa Gordone Serbelloni when the Ottoman army was nearing the siege of Vienna.
