In December 1947 a Southwest Airways Douglas DC-3 flying into the airport made the world's first blind landing by a scheduled commercial airliner using Ground-Controlled Approach (GCA) radar, Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Fog Investigation and Dispersal Operation (FIDO) oil-burning units adjacent to the runway.
Thunderbird Field began in 1939 as a collaborative project by Hollywood agent and producer Leland Hayward, former Air Service pilot John H. "Jack" Connelly, and Life magazine photographer John Swope, founders of Southwest Airways.
Pacific Air Lines (formerly Southwest Airways flying Douglas DC-3s) merged with Bonanza Air Lines and West Coast Airlines to form Air West which continued F-27 flights.
