In January 2010, he made his debut for the Portuguese side Sporting Clube de Braga senior team in a Taça da Liga game against U.D. Leiria.

Sporting's Derlei and Hélder Postiga missed there penalties while David Luiz and Carlos Martins converted there penalties to clinch Benfica there very first Taça da Liga.
Returning to Setúbal for the 2007–08 campaign, Carvalhal enjoyed his best year as a manager, leading the Sadinos to the sixth position in the league – with subsequent UEFA Cup qualification, with the club posting one of the best defensive records in Europe that year – and victory in the inaugural edition of the domestic League Cup, against Sporting Clube de Portugal.
In his third season he played 37 official matches (3,214 minutes of action), helping the Sadinos win the inaugural Portuguese League Cup.
In October 2007, he moved on to Naval, the same club where he started his career, until 7 September 2009, where he was sacked because of poor results after the recent 1–1 draw against Santa Clara in the Portuguese League Cup.
After Quim saved Hélder Postiga's penalty, Carlos Martins stepped up to the penalty spot and scored the decisive penalty to clinch Benfica's first Taça da Liga.
