In 2007 a transfer was almost arranged with PFC CSKA Sofia, but Patacas ultimately stayed at Nacional, amassing a further 55 league appearances in the following two seasons combined for the Madeirans and qualifying to the UEFA Europa League in the second.
Both were important for the course of the war; the first battle, fought in July 1942, halted the advance of Axis forces into Egypt and the second, fought in October and November 1942, routed them, and is considered a turning point in the Western Desert Campaign.
He was also eventually awarded the captain's armband, appearing in 125 games in the first division and 56 in the second as well as competing in the UEFA Champions League (in 2003–04, although backing up Pablo Cavallero in the domestic league, he would appear in five group stage matches, as Celta proggressed to the round-of-16 game) and in the UEFA Cup.
Subsequently he returned to his first club, playing four years in the Belgian Third Division and two in the second, now with the shirt of R.E. Mouscron.
