In addition to his work as an architect, Hewlett was an artist whose watercolors have been exhibited at the Toledo Museum of Art and the Florida Gulf Coast Art Center.

The park comprises a 42-room mansion, designed by the New York architectural firm of Lord & Hewlett, with a surrounding area containing Italian, Oriental, and Cutting gardens and greenhouses.
Around this time he also served as accompanist for singers Ernestine Schumann-Heink and Dame Clara Butt in their Canadian recital tours.
