Barr died on April 3, 1938 in Clark County, Indiana north of Jeffersonville after sustaining a broken neck in a head-on car collision on US Highway 31.
As US 31 approaches southern South Bend, Indiana it converges with US 20 and proceeds westwards then north on a freeway (the St. Joseph Valley Parkway), bypassing South Bend and proceeding into Michigan.

Environmental impact studies have shown that the fifth phase of the then-to-be-constructed freeway segment between Napier Avenue near Benton Harbor, Michigan, and I-94 may not be complete until 2015 (see St. Joseph Valley Parkway).

From there it follows Main Street through downtown Benton Harbor to the eastern terminus at Exit 33 on I-94/US 31 in Benton Township.
