The engine was an adaptation of the well-proven and reliable Ford 10 Model C motor car engine.
Its name is a portmanteau of Diesel and Otto, referring to the Diesel engine, first introduced by German engineer Rudolf Diesel, and the Otto cycle, as a reference to Nicolaus Otto (even though the invention of the gasoline engine is variously attributed to both Nicolaus Otto and Alphonse Beau de Rochas).
In 1899 the company expanded outside Waynesboro and bought the Crowell industrial park in Greencastle, Pennsylvania, and began producing its Geiser's first gasoline engines there.
This ruling uses miles per gallon gasoline equivalent for all fuel and advanced technology vehicles available in the U.S. market including plug-in hybrids, electric vehicles, flexible-fuel vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, natural gas vehicles, diesel-powered vehicles, and gasoline-powered vehicles.
Although Continental is most well known for its engines for light aircraft, it was also contracted to produce the air-cooled V-12 AV-1790-5B gasoline engine for the U.S. Army's M47 Patton tank and the diesel AVDS-1790-2A and its derivatives for the M48, M60 Patton and Merkava main battle tanks.
However, owing to much higher combustion temperatures due to high cylinder compression and turbo or supercharging, diesel engines produce much higher engine-out NOx emissions than do spark-ignition gasoline engines, but the nonexistent NOx after-treatment causes diesel engines to emit significantly more NOx at the tailpipe compared to a typical gasoline engine with a 3-way catalyst.
Engine options that were considered included an alternative fuel steam engine, based on earlier designs by Abner Doble, or a two-cycle gasoline engine with a McCulloch/Paxton supercharger.
