Banks Peninsula

The relatively small Pōhatu Marine Reserve centres on Flea Bay on the south-east side of the peninsula and the larger Akaroa Marine Reserve lies at the entrance to the Akaroa Harbour.

Hinewai Reserve, a private nature reserve, has been established on the peninsula to allow for native forest to regenerate on land that was once farmed.


Don Beaven

An advocate of the Mediterranean diet, Beaven helped establish the South Island wine industry, planting vineyards and olive groves around Christchurch and Banks Peninsula.

Lake Ellesmere / Te Waihora

It lies partially in extreme southeastern Selwyn District and partially in the southwestern extension of the former Banks Peninsula District, which now (since 2006) is a ward in the city of Christchurch.

Muehlenbeckia astonii

astonii is found only at the southern tip of the North Island (Palliser Bay) and on the eastern side of the South Island from northern Marlborough to Birdlings Flat at the south-west edge of Banks Peninsula.

Phantom island

The Baja California peninsula appears on some early maps as an island but was later discovered to be attached to the mainland of North America; likewise Banks Peninsula off the South Island of New Zealand which was originally called "Banks Island" by Captain James Cook.

Pōhatu Marine Reserve

Pōhatu Marine Reserve centered on Flea Bay and lies between Ounu-hau Point and Redcliffe Point on Banks Peninsula in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand.

Rhopalostylis

R. sapida, known as the nikau palm, is the only palm native to mainland New Zealand, and is found in lowland forests on the North Island, in coastal areas of the South Island as far south as Banks Peninsula, and on the Chatham Islands at 44°S.
