It is named after the 18th century Prussian general Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher.
On the night of 1 January 1814, Prussian troops under Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher advanced across the frozen Rhine near Kaub, freeing the lands on the Rhine’s left bank from French rule; they declared it officially Prussian territory on 1 June 1815.

The castle was finally bought by Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher the Prussian Generalfeldmarschall who led his army against Napoleon I at the Battle of the Nations at Leipzig in 1813 and at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 with the Duke of Wellington.
After Waterloo Guilleminot became chief of staff to Marshal Davout and he was designated a commissary and in that capacity on July 3, 1815 he signed an armistice with Blücher at Saint-Cloud.
And on 26 August, Prussian Marshal Blücher defeated Marshal MacDonald at the Katzbach.
On 29 May 1815, shortly before the battle of Waterloo, Wellington and Blücher reviewed the Allied cavalry here.
