The incident was reported by Luciano Bianciardi and Carlo Cassola in the essay I minatori della Maremma (The miners of Maremma), and has been a source of inspiration for the novel La vita agra and for the film of the same name directed by Carlo Lizzani.

This weekly, a precursor of “L’Espresso”, published work by many of twentieth century Italy’s foremost intellectuals: as well as Briganti himself these included Carlo Lizzani, Michelangelo Antonioni, Enzo Forcella, Giorgio Bassani, Renato Guttuso, Roberto Longhi, Anna Banti, Guido Carli, Arrigo Benedetti and Gastone Manacorda.
During his career Laimi worked to films of different genres, often united from having Milan as set, including Eriprando Visconti's film debut A Milanese Story, Duccio Tessari's noir film La morte risale a ieri sera, Umberto Lenzi's poliziottesco Gang War in Milan, Carlo Lizzani's Storie di vita e malavita and Renato Pozzetto's directorial debut Saxofone.
The original film had Robert Ryan linking four different spy stories, each helmed by a different director; original James Bond director Terence Young for the English sequences, Christian-Jaque for the French, Carlo Lizzani for the Italian and Werner Klingler for the German sequences, but the German sequences were cut for the American release.
