While maintaining his solo career, he also served ten years as principal violist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta and Carlo Maria Giulini, guest principal violist of the New York Philharmonic, and was a member of An die Musik, the Aldanya String Quartet, and the White House Quartet.
His time in Los Angeles coincided with the eras of Zubin Mehta, Carlo Maria Giulini, and André Previn.
At the age of 18, in order to supplement his family's income (which had been depleted by the Great Depression), he auditioned for the viola section of the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, at the time Italy's foremost orchestra.
He has worked with prominent conductors including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Frans Bruggen, Pierre Boulez, Charles Dutoit, Carlo Maria Giulini, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, André Previn, Sir Simon Rattle, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, and Evgeny Svetlanov.

As a soloist, she worked with many notable conductors such as Leonard Bernstein, Sir Georg Solti, Bernard Haitink, Jean Fournet, Charles Groves, Brian Priestman, Colin Davis, Carlo Maria Giulini, Otto Ackermann, Erich Leinsdorf, Christoph von Dohnányi, and Charles Munch.
The choir collaborates with the orchestra Münchner Philharmoniker, and has been conducted by prominent conductors such as Gustav Mahler, Hans Pfitzner, Krzysztof Penderecki, Rudolf Kempe, Herbert von Karajan, Sergiu Celibidache, Carlo Maria Giulini, Seiji Ozawa, Zubin Mehta, Lorin Maazel, Mariss Jansons, James Levine.
He also appeared as a soloist with such illustrious conductors as Sergiu Celibidache, Antonio Guarnieri, Carlo Maria Giulini, Igor Markevitch, Jonel Perlea, Paul van Kempen, Erich Leinsdorf, etc., and with other equally famous instrumentalists including Andrés Segovia, Alain Meunier and Dino Asciolla.
The names of Franco Ferrara, Carlo Maria Giulini, Genady Rozdestvensky, Bruno Bartolletti, Ferdinand Leitner often appear on concert programs and in numerous collaborations.
