2 unusual facts about Chinese in Fiji

Chinese in Fiji

The activities of a few of them, says Fiji Law Society President Graeme Leung, have unfairly stigmatized the Chinese community in the eyes of the public.

Well-known persons of whole or partial Chinese descent include Cabinet Minister Pio Wong, Senators Kenneth Low and James Ah Koy, Peter Lee ( former long serving General Manager of Coca Cola Fiji and currently heading Fiji's largest conglomerate - Carpenters ) and prominent lawyer Graeme Leung.

Andrew Deoki

Deoki proposed a compromise whereby 12 seats (four from each of the ethnic groups) were elected on communal roll, 18 were elected from cross-voting seats ( 6 Fijians, 6 Indians, 3 Europeans and one each from Chinese, Rotumans and Pacific Islanders, and the remaining 6 seats were to be elected on a common roll.
