This church was previously the collegiate church of Notre-Dame-du-Bourg, which in 1992 was raised to the status of co-cathedral of the Diocese of Belley-Ars, as the bishop and diocesan administration of Belley, later Belley-Ars, had been resident in Bourg-en-Bresse since 1978.
Saint Roland was the third abbot of a Cistercian monastery founded in 1140 in Chézery, France, in what is now the Diocese of Belley-Ars.
In 1819 a foundation from the mother house in Lyon was established in the Diocese of Belley under the leadership of Mother Saint Joseph Chaney.
