It was created by the division of the Diocese of Exeter in 1876 approximately along the Devon-Cornwall border (a few parishes of Devon west of the Tamar were included in the new diocese).
Should there be insufficient candidates within the Salisbury Diocese then applicants from the Diocese of Exeter would be considered.

A keen photographer, he retired to Bovey Tracey in 1991, where he continues to serve the church as an honorary assistant bishop within the Diocese of Exeter.
