September 20 – Giovanni Battista de Rossi, Italian archaeologist, famous outside his field for his rediscovery of early Christian catacombs (born 1822).
He devoted his scientific interest principally to Christian archaeology, encouraged by Giovanni Battista de Rossi.
In 1888 Giovanni Battista de Rossi established that the Codex was related to the Bibles mentioned by Bede.
