Long before they were fashionable, he championed playwrights who were regarded as too bold for American tastes, such as Hermann Sudermann, Arthur Pinero, and preeminently Henrik Ibsen, about whom he wrote frequently and eloquently.
The first play performed by the Kaunas Drama Theatre was Hermann Sudermann's St. John's Day, directed by Juozas Vaičkus, premiering on December 19, 1920 in the former Russian City Theatre, in what is now the Kaunas State Musical Theatre.
This movie was based on the novel Das Hohe Lied by Hermann Sudermann and the Broadway play The Song of Songs by Edward Sheldon.
