Maguregui was fired by the Colchoneros in early October 1988 in spite of two consecutive home wins, 3–0 against Cádiz CF for the league and 2–1 over FC Groningen for the UEFA Cup (away goals rule elimination), being one of four coaches used by the club during the season (elusive Jesús Gil was the chairman) which saw the team finish in fourth place.
