LP was founded in New York in 1964 by Martin Cohen, following his difficulty in obtaining instruments for his own use, partly because of restrictions then in place on imports of instruments (and everything else) from Cuba following the Cuban missile crisis of 1962.

Approximately a year later, Arrington relocated from Ohio to San Francisco, California where he learned Latin percussion and drumming as well as played with Coke Escovedo and Pete Escovedo and Sheila E.
