Figalli received his master degree in mathematics from the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa in 2006, and earned his doctorate in 2007 under the supervision of Luigi Ambrosio at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and Cédric Villani at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon.
In 2001 the notion of an integral current was extended to arbitrary metric spaces by Ambrosio and Kirchheim.
Once in a common space Z, the flat distance between the images is taken by viewing the images of the spaces as integral currents in the sense of Ambrosio–Kirchheim.
Katz has performed research in systolic geometry in collaboration with Luigi Ambrosio, Victor Bangert, Mikhail Gromov, Steve Shnider, Shmuel Weinberger, and others.
