The railway line used to connect the town to the mainline of Malayan Railways at Kuang, which was opened in 1915, and westwards to Batang Berjuntai which was opened in 1918.
There used to be a railway line connecting Batang Berjuntai with Batu Arang and onwards to the mainline of Malayan Railways at Kuang.
His father a contract railway engineer from Kotahena, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) settled in Malaya (1880s) after accepting the permanent position as Head Guard of the railway between Teluk Anson and Tapah and later retiring as Chief Inspector, Permanent Ways, of the Malayan Railways.
