María Ruiz de Burton

Soon after the Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo was signed in 1848, Ruiz de Burton, her mother, and her brother moved the Monterey and became American citizens.

His brother, Francisco Ruiz, was commandate of the Presidio of San Diego.

In 1870, after her husband's burial at West Point, Ruiz de Burton returned to Rancho Jamul in San Diego, spending the rest of her life in lawsuits trying to keep the title to Rancho Jamul while also working on her writing career.

Who Would Have Thought It?

María Ruiz de Burton's Who Would Have Thought It? (1872) was the first novel to be written in English by a Mexican living in the United States.
