Throughout this period, they had a steady stream of releases on RCA in Mexico and one of these, a Mexican popular tune named "María Elena" (Lorenzo Barcelata; named after the wife of a Mexican president and recorded in 1958), became a steady seller, a success throughout Latin America and was finally released on a single in the U.S. in 1963.
In 1984, John and Bill met with Maria Elena at Lubbock and told her about their desire to overdub more Buddy Holly solos, and she agreed.

He then married María Dolores "Mary" Tarrero-Serrano (October 5, 1924 – September 23, 2010) on 17 June 1945 in the Chapel of the Presidential Palace, and they had two daughters, Maria Antonetta Prío-Tarrero (b. 14 June 1946 in Cuba and married to Cesar Odio, former City Manager of the City of Miami) and Maria Elena Prío-Tarrero (b. 30 March 1949 in Cuba, divorced from Alfredo Duran).
Their primary target is the wealthy Don Carlos Alvarado (Julian Rivero), whose daughter Maria Elena (Fay McKenzie) has been promised a starring role in the film in return for his financial support.
