In 1949 the family went to England for "Ath", who had received a Nuffield Foundation fellowship, to do a doctorate on the evolution of the manuscript tradition of the Greek mathematician Pappus of Alexandria.
Before entering medical school, Simons studied as a Rotary International Postgraduate Fellow in the Humanities at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England, and a Nuffield Foundation Fellow in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge.
